Application for long-term stays exceeding 90 days to Luxembourg
From 1 October 2026, applicants must personally submit an application for a long stay visa (D visa) to the Embassy of Luxembourg in their country of origin or country of residence in advance to their intended stay.

Application before entering the country
For applications to the Embassy of Luxembourg in Tokyo, please send your complete application files and your
contact form (Word, 300 Kb)
by email first to consulartokyo.amb@mae.etat.lu.
You will then be invited to submit your application in person on appointment at the Embassy. Note that each applicant, including minors, is required to visit the Embassy personally.
The application fee is 50 EUR, to be paid in EUR bank notes at the time of application.
After submission, the application will be examined by the General Department of Immigration in Luxembourg. Processing times differ depending on the category of stay and may take several months.
If the application is approved, the applicant is notified and invited to submit their passport within 60 days, on appointment at the Embassy or by post including a return Letter Pack Plus. A long stay visa (D visa) for entry into Luxembourg will be affixed to the passport, valid for 6 months from the day of issuance unless otherwise specified in the notification.
Note that the Embassy cannot answer questions regarding required documents, processing times etc. in individual cases. Please read the corresponding webpages carefully, and contact the General Department of Immigration in English, French or German directly for any further questions.
Note that all application documents not in English, French or German must be accompanied by a translation from a professional translation service.
After entering the country
The visa D holder in applicable categories must complete the procedures to declare their arrival at the administration of the commune where they intend to establish residence within 3 days of arrival in Luxembourg, and submit an application for a residence permit for third-country nationals to the General Department of immigration of the Ministry of Home Affairs within 3 months of entry into Luxembourg.
