Luxembourg elected for the first time to the UNSC, for 2013
Press release (19.10.2012)
Luxembourg elected as a non-permanent member at the UN Security Council for the period 2013/2014 by the United Nations General Assembly on 18th October 2012
On 18th October 2012, Luxembourg was elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for the period 2013 to 2014.
The Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg, Jean Asselborn, travelled to New York on 17th and 18th October 2012 in order to take part in the election of five new non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council for the mandate of 2013/2014.
Luxembourg, a member of the regional grouping of Western European and Other States (Western European and Other States Group, WEOG), was elected in the second round by 131 votes. Two seats had to be filled within the Security Council by the WEOG. Three candidates were running for two seats, namely Luxembourg, Finland and Australia. The Grand Duchy, a founding member of the United Nations, had applied for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council for the period 2013/2014 in March 2001.
In his first reaction after the election, the Luxembourg Foreign Minister warmly thanked all members of the international community who supported the candidacy of the Grand Duchy. Minister Asselborn stressed that this election engages Luxembourg to live up to its responsibilities as a member of the international community in its own right. The Grand Duchy has now the opportunity to demonstrate at the highest level its solidarity and proven experience as an "honest broker" without a hidden agenda, being sensitive to the concerns of other member states.
