<ALAN JOHNSTON’S PROFILE>
Born in Zürich in 1959. He lives with his wife and three children in Luxembourg.
Alan is a confirmed artist/naturalist who has been drawing and painting in the field for over thirty years, during which time he has completed 180 sketchbooks. He is the author/illustrator of 6 published books,
3 of which were commissioned by the Paris editors Gallimard and Nathan. Thanks to his recent university studies his work has become less illustrative, more conceptual and more subjective: almost abstract oils on canvas, Ink (“Sumi-e”) drawings of plant shadows and ecological artists books. This work explores ambiguities between figuration and abstraction, between science and art and between seeing and looking.
He is an experienced artist-teacher and has led many workshops and courses for all ages in Luxembourg and abroad. From 2002-2008 he led the pilot project DA VINCI UND SO WEITER for the Ministry of National Education (SCRIPT) in Luxembourg, bringing children and teachers closer to nature through drawing.
Alan has represented Luxembourg for Residences, international exhibitions and projects in the French Alps (“Les Ecrins” National Park), at The Leigh Yawkey-Woodson Museum, USA, and with the Artists for Nature Foundation in Poland and Holland.
The works in this exhibition originate from his second artist’s residence in the village of Kijimadaira, Nagano Prefecture after the one in May-July 2010.
