The Grand Duchy has a thriving arts scene. In preparation of 1995, when Luxembourg was designated European cultural capital, the Government decided to greatly improve on the arts infrastructure. Many new spaces opened in the last few years, national ones such as the Philharmonic Hall, the contemporary art museum Mudam, the Casino forum d’art contemporain (art hall) and also many regional exhibition and art halls (Echternach and Ettelbruck). The national theatres in Luxembourg and in Esch-sur-Alzette were renovated and re-equipped with state of the art technology. A concert hall for ‘amplified’ music (rock, folk, dance, electronic music) opened next to a former steel mill, soon to be transformed into a university town (Esch-Belval).

Luxembourg creative people not only benefit from good infrastructure, but also open borders, taking in the artistic expressions of neighboring countries. With better education, immigration and growing affluence, the country has gone through a bottom up transformation : things which were lacking until recently such as a designers’ guild and a Foundation for promoting architecture were founded. Many grass roots initiatives, supplemented by government promoted structures like ‘Centre culturel de rencontre Neumünster’ (in the capital) and ‘Kulturfabrik’ (Esch) have contributed to a revivified arts scene.

Some artists from the Grand Duchy have become very well known internationally. Just to name two who visited Japan recently : Su Mei Tse (contemporary art installations, exhibited at Mito Art Tower in 2009) and Francesco Tristano Schlimé (pianist, performed a concert in Ueno and other locations in Japan). Both will return to Japan, hopefully in 2011.

The Luxembourg Embassy in Japan regularly invites Luxembourg artists, organizes concerts or hosts exhibitions which are open to the public. It promotes an ‘artists-in-residence’ program in Japan (TWS, Kijimadaira, Youkobo).
